Last week in psychology we were learning about obdience and conformity. One of the most interesting things i think we touched on was anti-conformity and independent behaviour. Basically anti-conformity takes place when a person acts against the rules of group norms so that could be a guy wearing his hair long because the group norm is to wear it short. That isn’t an independent behaviour because it has been influenced by the group, which brought me to thinking that have the decisions i have made been 100 % ?. I know that i’ve taken a lot of decisions that were influenced by the advice of others in a small or major way or even by looking at something in someone elses shoes and without that i dont know where i’d be today. So the way i see it is that there are two types of being independent:
1 - Where you handle your stuff like your expenses and all that business
2 - Your mindset
I don’t know if any of use can say your truly 100% independent because yeah your handling your money and expenses but like in everyday life the decisions we make are influenced by other people whether it be someone giving you advice or someone with more authority than you telling you to do something. There are loads of things you can say against this like what if it’s a situation that no one you know of has been in so you are forced to think and act alone or maybe there wasn’t any norms in your situation but even in those cases some decisions we make we make without knowing because we grew up with that thinking and we were taught that way because it was the norm. So are we really that independent or are we just going on what people have told us ?

i dont think any thought process is fully independant of outside influences. especially not in a world where your brain can be forced to execute unsigned bits by third parties.
